Born in 1949 in Kondagaon in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh, Jaidev Baghel comes from a tribal artisan community. Having learned the special bronze metal casting technique known as Gadavakam from his elders, Jayadeva has inherited his art in the traditional manner. Their exquisite skill and strength come to life in elaborately crafted sculptures inspired by folklore and mythology and often featuring rural deities. Mata or mother goddesses and goddesses or semi-goddesses, who are worshiped to ward off bad harvests, epidemics and droughts, appear in different forms from time to time. Their repertoire ranges from small hand-held sculptures to large-scale artworks that adorn public spaces across India. About twenty Garhwa trainees live and work with him in the facility he has set up in Kondagaon. Winner of national and many other awards, Jaydev's work has been highly appreciated and has been displayed in many exhibitions across India and in Moscow, Heidelberg, Stuttgart, London, Oxford, Scotland, Rome, Paris, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok . Australia, America and Switzerland.
